In our July webinar we will talk about the “Brazilian Spotted Fever” with the presence of three of the researchers who were part of the project to determine, through a protocol, the priority areas for action by public entities dedicated to mitigating and preventing the occurrence of Brazilian Spotted Fever: biologist Luis de Queiróz, student André Pinheiro and researcher Joao Pedro Martin (Luiz de Queiroz Higher School of Agriculture – ESALQ, University of São Paulo, Piracicaba/SP).

Spotted fever is a disease that can become lethal in a few days if left untreated (it can be cured, but the mortality rate is high). In South America, the causative agents of this disease are bacteria of the genus Rickettsia and the main host organisms for these bacteria are some types of ticks.

In Brazil, most cases of this disease occur in the Southeast region, mainly in the interior of the state of Sao Paulo, where the disease is associated with the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii and the star tick (Amblyomma sculptum).
